SUMMARY: To serve as a designer on a
theatrical production is to combine scholarly research, artistic vision,
and collaborative communication, with strategic choices in technology,
calendar planning, and leadership. Each production design represents a
public presentation of collaborative work witnessed by hundreds or
thousands of people.
Professor
Kizer has served as a designer on behalf of the performing arts at Plymouth
State University for over one-hundred twenty productions, including
theatre, dance, and opera. These include working with teams of dozens of
students serving in many capacities. The work includes large-scale
painting, graphic work, rendering and model building, computer drafting and
modeling, lighting, and cuing. It also includes the production and
orchestration of projection media, even including the development of new
technologies and methods.
Kizer has also
served as a professional designer for over one-hundred fifty productions
outside of Plymouth State. These include professional theatre and dance
companies in the United States and Europe, and include notable venues such
as the Pallazo della Sapienza in Rome, and the Kennedy Center in Washington
D.C.
Professor
Kizer presents workshops and lectures on all aspects of his work, and has
done so on behalf of organizations in Europe, Asia, and various
universities or national organizations in the United States.
This work is
documented in this curriculum vitae, along with other publications,
exhibitions, and scholarly research.

TEACHING AREAS/INTERESTS:
Theatrical scenic design, lighting design, projections design and
technology, sound design, stagecraft, drafting, computer-aided drafting and
modeling, computer animation, web design, props, scene painting.
|
|
RESEARCH AREAS/INTERESTS:
Sustainable Theatre: Examining the way in
which the theatre industry works, specifically as it relates to my own
areas of expertise. This includes finding ways to reuse
materials, reduce waste, and reduce use of electricity and expendable items
in theatrical lighting.
|
|
Projections for the performing
arts: I have been pushing projection technology in my work
since the mid nineties. Old-school and cutting edge technologies combine
to allow highly experimental methods of technology to be applied in
environments and venues that might not ordinarily be expected to support
such techniques. This includes methods to have projection media respond
to the movement or voice of performers. This includes using banks of
projectors working in unison through local networks of communication. This includes designing media to work with scrims or mirrors (18th century
technology) to produce results that are a hybrid of digital and analog
solutions.
|
|
Computer aided design and
modeling: I
have worked at developing a system of design wherein all components of the
final package are generated on computer in an holistic manner. The
components of a scenic design package, for example, include a variety of
types of drafting which detail the entire set and all of its components in
scale with notes and measurements. It includes frontal depictions of
every piece of scenery in color, and it includes a three-dimensional
depiction of the final product as intended. By integrating a variety
of methods and software, a photo-realistic rendering can be produced which
can be automatically updated by changing a single detail in one part of the
total package.
|
|
HTML based aids for teaching and
production: Communication
is the primary necessity for both of these aspects of theatre.
Hyper-text markup language is an invaluable tool in this respect. I
have developed web-based stage management aids, and advising tools for the
Theatre program. I have used the Internet to post complete design packages,
and have built HTML driven classroom aids. I build and maintain
resources for theatre and teaching online.
