Online Earth System Science Courses

The courses are standards and research based and designed to model best practice for online education. These courses were developed and are sponsored by the Earth System Science Education Alliance (ESSEA) . The courses may be previewed at: http://oz.plymouth.edu/~essea/ , the course outline will be modified slightly from what you see on the preview page. This is the second course in a series of courses that will be offered as part of the three year project Preparing the Earth System Scientists of Tomorrow at Plymouth State University.
NS5090.01 - ST:INTRODUCTION TO EARTH SYSTEM SCIENCE - 4 Credits

Thursday 5PM – 7PM 3/6, 4/3, 6/12
The course material is organized around the national standards for K-8 Earth Systems Science (ESS) education. Students will meet multiple times to share ideas in a face to face environment with the majority of class conducted online. The course is appropriate for any educator wishing to become familiar with or increase their knowledge of ESS. Students must have access to a K-8 classroom or an informal educational setting where they can use collaborative, inquiry-based ESS activities with students. NS 5090 ST: Teaching Middle School Earth Science
These courses are structured as a collaborative, inquiry-based models and are held in an electronic environment where teachers and environmental educators can study Earth System Science (ESS). While the course material is organized around the national standards at the middle school level the course is appropriate for any educator wishing to increase their knowledge of ESS. The ESS topics covered this semester will be Water, Plate Tectonics and Tsunamis.
The course will meet in a blended educational environment with teachers meeting several times to share ideas in a face to face environment with the majority of the class conducted online.

Class size: the class sizes will be limited to 12 teachers.
Future Classes: The Middle School ESS course will also be offered in the summer of 2009. In the summer of 2009 a high school version of the course will also be offered.
