Spreadsheet Activity  – The Shopping Spree

Your grandmother has given you $150.00 and tells you to go out and buy at least one of each item from the spreadsheet below.  You must also pay the 6% sales tax.  Your task is to create a spreadsheet that will help you get as close to the $150.00 without going over (not even by a penny!)

A few hints:
Remember: all formulae have to start with an equal sign (=). [You'll enter a formula in D3 and E3, then you'll use the click-and-drag feature to fill in D4-D10 and E4-E10]
Click-and-Drag: highlight a cell by clicking it with the cursor, let go, then move the mouse to the bottom right corner of the cell, left-click and drag down.
Subtotal: multiply the quantity by the price.
Tax: 6%: multiply .06 by the subtotal.
Total: add the subtotal to the tax using the sigma button.
Grand Total: add F3-F10 and display the sum in F11.

Use the Sigma button (Auto Sum) in the diagram below to get the total and the grand total. [Make sure the right cells are highlighted].

When you are done with your spreadsheet, save it under your last name and e-mail it to your instructor as an attachment.

Check:
If one of the quantities in column A is changed, does the subtotal, tax, total, and grand total change? Yes: you did it right!
Click on any cell in column D, E or F: is a formula displayed? Yes: you did it right!
Grand Total: is it below $150, but very, very close (within ten cents)? Yes: you did it right!
E-mail the spreadsheet to your instructor: did you get a reply? Yes: you did it right!
