Richard Hartshorne (1899-1992) organized and directed the Division which grew from one secretary and one geographer to approximately seventy geographers from more than twenty universities.

Dick is pictured here (left) with his good friend and colleague Jimmy, who also served in Washington (OSS) during WWII. Jimmy is, of course, Preston James. Here they are in conversation prior to a Geographers on Film interview at Lincoln, Nebraska, April 26, 1979.

Thus with several still photographs we have spanned the 20th century with four prominent contributers to American geography. Three of the four are available (VHS) via Geographers on Film. Go back to the first GOF page to (1) learn more about the GOF series and (2) to determine who has been interviewed to date.
