PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES

C Developed at Bell labs in early '70s.  Later versions include C++.  The
language in which much of UNIX is written.  Works on a variety of
machines.  An "object-oriented" language.

COBOL  Common Business Oriented Language.  Rear Admiral Grace Hopper
credited with leading the design committee.  Most business applications
written in COBOL.

BASIC  Developed in '64 by John Kemeny at Dartmouth.  English-like
commands make it relatively easy to learn. 

Pacal  Named after 17th century mathmetician.  Highly structured.  Good
learning tool.

Fortran  Used for engineering and scientific applications

4GL  Fourth Generation Languages, GUI driven packages automatically create
the programming code (in C or Cobol)

Java Newer programming languages designed for internet .
