OPERATING SYSTEMS
UNIX Op sys of the Internet and other servers. A networking op sys. Developed at Bell
Labs of AT&T. Further developed at Berkeley, and SCO. Open to public use. PSC
uses "FreeBSD", a Unix variation.
Linux is a relatively recent variation
of Unix. Said to be very "robust" (i.e. doesn't crash), maintained by
freewheeling unpaid group
DOS [MS-DOS, PC-DOS] Bill Gates's first big hit. He wrote the original MS-DOS for the
original IBM-PCs. DOS was the platform for the original Windows interface (which ran on
top of DOS)
WindowsNT A true operating system unto itself, with multitasking and multiuser
(networking) capabilities built into system (see also article)
VMS Virtual Memory System. Created by Digital Equipment Corp
OS/2 IBM's upgrade of PC DOS. An expensive failure in the marketplace.
System7 for the Apple Mac System 8.5 newer op system for iMac
Rhapsody was being
developed by Apple.
