Pick-Uppalooza: What is it?
A challenge to the PSU community: Clean up Plymouth and change the culture of littering by going for a walk with a grocery bag and filling it with litter.
The Big Pile Up (Spring 2014)
When: Saturday, April 26, 1:00 pm - 4:30 pm Where: Alumni Green in front of the HUB on the Plymouth State University campus, in coordination with Earth Jams How:
- Get a plastic [grocery] bag. (In fact, we suggest at least 2: one for trash, one for recyclables; more bags means more entries into the raffle!)
- Go for a walk around Plymouth
- Pick up any trash you see. (It would be especially nice if you put recyclables in one bag and trash in the other)
- Throw you bag(s) in our piles on Alumni Green in front of the HUB any time 11:00 am - 2:00 pm
- For every bag you throw in the pile, you will receive one ticket to be entered in the raffle!
- The bag must contain LITTER that YOU have collected. (Household garbage will NOT be accepted; You will be asked to sign a form stating that your bag contains discarded litter that you picked up.
- Litter may be collected at any time before or during the event.
- You will be asked to sort recyclables from non-recyclable trash. We encourage you to collect the litter into two bags for pre-sorting.
- One average grocery bag full = one entry (larger bags may be considered for multiple entries).
- Upon throwing your bag(s) into the pile, you will be given one form per entry for you to write your name and contact information.
- Enter as often as you like.
- Regardless of how many entries you have, you may only win one prize.
- At the end of the event, winners will be drawn at random.
- You need NOT be present at the drawing to win.
What's the story?
One Plymouth State Professor, who goes by the name "the Plymouth RecycleManiac," had been picking up garbage on his daily dog walks. For months, he was just properly disposing of it. But then during RecycleMania, he took the quest to make our community litter-free to a new level. Each day, the man and his dog left with a grocery sack. Each day, the sack came back full. By time RecycleMania was over, the RecycleManiac had collected 117.5 pounds of recyclable material!!
Now, he is challenging the campus community to follow in his footsteps. So, grab a grocery bag, go for a walk, and help leave Plymouth cleaner than you found it!
