Canaan, New Hampshire is a rural town in west-central NH with over 3000 people and roughly 85% forest (about the same as forest cover for the state).  We have lived in Canaan since 1986 in a house that was built in 1785. We have 115 acres of mostly mixed deciduous/coniferous woods. We hike and cross-country ski in our woods often. The woods were once sheep pastures in the 19th century and so there are many stonewalls throughout, much like other woodlands of NH. One picture below shows a clearing with cut and split wood from our lot. About 90% of the heat for our home comes from oak, maple, and birch from our own woodlot. The other picture shows our vegetable garden in the backyard.

Wood stacked for drying in the clearing up in the woods. We heat our home mostly with wood.
