Remote Sensing Exercise
Directions:
Follow the directions on the exercise I handed out last Thursday that deal with Mount Rainier. You need to write a short paper that includes only the results and discussion sections (you do not need to do abstract, introduction, or methods/materials sections). Your paper should include the land use map (integrate this into your word document (Insert: Picture) and include a figure label for the map. You might want to make a one-celled table to insert the picture into so your map will have a boundary. Suggested land uses to be mapped include: old-growth forest, regrowing forest, logged areas, water bodies, urban areas, farms and other. You should include a second map that superimposes land use areas and jurisdictional areas. You also need to have a table that includes the total area encompassed by the map and the areas of old-growth in each of the different jurisdictions. When you do the area measurements in NIH Image, you can copy the measurements and paste them into a Excel file for manipulation. You can then paste the useful portion of the Excel file into Word. Finally you need to do either item A or B of the Forest Fragmentation portion of the exercise.
The maps for this exercise are located at:
Some hints:
Before doing anything, open NIH Image and go to the preferences option and set the buffer to 1000. This will allow you to copy and paste larger images. You will have to close it and then re-open it for the changes in buffer size to be made permanent.
Save often, but do not save to the names of any of the existing files. This is particularly important when you are filling in the land use map with colors and the colors leak.
When outlining areas, be sure you use a color that is not used in the image you are drawing on. The Edit:Select All option followed by Histogram shows you the colors in your image.
When superimposing one map on the other. Copy the map to superimpose and paste it on the other image. The Paste Control box is under the Window menu item.
